Costa Rica


Costa Rica is called the jewel of Central America. The country is officially called the Republic of Costa Rica. It is a heaven for tourists. The country is very quite and calm, very different from its neighbors. Costa Rica means the “rich coast”. The country has a long coastline that makes it a perfect place for beach lovers and surfers. It is adobe to the world’s most exotic flora and fauna. There is a large expanse of lush green jungles with a wide variety of wildlife. There is a huge variety of exotic birds and butterflies in Costa Rica. It has been estimated that there are more than four hundred species of birds found in Costa Rica. You can see various types of turtle nests along the coast, some of which are endangered and hence are preserved in Costa Rica.

Travel to Costa Rica

If you are traveling to Costa Rica, the best time is between December and May. Although it rains all the year round but this part of the year is not very wet. It pours constantly in most of the part of Costa Rica from May to November. The international airport called the Aero Puerto Internacional Juan Santamaria at San Jose handles most of the international traffic. There are number of domestic airlines to take you round the country. The most prevalent domestic flights used are Bolanos and Nature Air. The best way to travel around Costa Rica is by bus. There is connectivity through bus to the most interior parts of the country. But there are no central bus terminals; instead there are large number of bus stops in the cities, which creates a bit of problem for tourists.

Attractions

Costa Rica is abode to a prosperous assortment of flora and fauna. While the nation constitutes about 0.1% of the world's landmass, it holds about 5% of the world's variety of flora and fauna. Over 25% of Costa Rica is made up of cosseted jungles and reserves. One of the major attractions for tourists from all over the world is the Corcovado National Park. This National Park is known for its unusual variety of tapirs and big cats. Tortuguero National Park is another major attraction for eco tourists from all over the world. The name ‘Tortuguero’ means full of turtles. It is not only the home to large variety of turtles but for more than three hundred species of birds. There spiders, howler and white-throated Capuchin monkeys, hawksbill, giant leatherback and other species that are termed endangered. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a host to more than two thousand genus of plants. It is and adobe to about one hundred mammals and about four hundred species of birds.

Language

In Costa Rica, Spanish is the official language. English is also very widely spoken in most of the parts of Costa Rica.

Shopping

There are large varieties of fine cigars available in Costa Rica. There are "De la Familia cigars", that are available only in this part of the world. And you cannot miss to purchase Habanos Costa Rica Handmade Cuban cigars from the Cuban artists in Costa Rica. Handmade ceramics, straw items, wooden articles and other handicrafts, all of which make outstanding mementos are available in the artisans markets of Costa Rica. There are artistic works in gold and silver available that symbolize the national heritage of the country.

Destinations in Costa Rica

Monteverde

One of the popular destinations in Costa Rica is Monteverde. It has the cloud forest reserve. It is an attraction to most of the local and international visitors.

Santa Elena

There is a small town called Santa Elena in the lose proximity of the place. The road from the town to the reserve has a number of attractions like a cheese factory, number of art galleries and a beautiful butterfly garden. The northwestern part of the country has some of the best beaches of the country.

Paraque Nacional Marino

One of the popular destinations in this part is the Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas de Guanacaste. The destination comprises of the most beautiful beach of the country, a small village for you to relax and also a place called Playa Grande, which is supposed to be the nesting ground for leather back turtles.

San Jose

If you want to experience the city life of Costa Rica, than San Jose is the place to be. There are tall office buildings, shopping malls, world class restaurants and large eateries. There are museums; cinema halls and the city offers a vibrant nightlife.
