Travel to Germany


Beauty of Germany:

The picturesque gardens, lovely mountains, fresh scent of air, the Bavarian Alps and the lovely rivers are for nature lovers. Busy cities where anything is possible is another part of Germany. This lively country with nature well nurtured is at the heart of Europe. The wonderful climate sure makes one sure of the fact that it is indeed a romantic location.

Visa Information:

The nationals of Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Columbia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria and Turkey need a transit visa to stay in the airport while waiting for the connecting flight for their desired destination. However, this is not required if they own a residence permit or a visa for the UK. As there are more exceptions to this and the regulations are subject to change consult with the nearest consulate or your travel agent.

Reaching there:

Lufthansa is the national airlines. Though Munich and Düsseldorf cater to international flights, Frankfurt’s international airport is the busiest one. It is said to be the most bustling airport next to Heathrow in Europe. It is 13 km southwest of the city.

By train: Germany can be reached by rail from major European cities. Eurostar provides the services from Europe. Refer to the website (www.eurostar.com) for the destinations and the available pass facilities.

Germany can also be reached by road and Eurotunnel.

Language:

German is the official language. French is a language that is understood and spoken by a moderate population. Danish is spoken by the minority population in the north of Schleswig-Holstein. Sorbic is spoken by a minority called Sorbs in Brandenburg and Saxony. Romani, Turkish and Kurdish are other languages spoken by a minor people. English is also a widely spoken language.

Notable Tourists Attractions:

Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria: This is probably one of the most pleasing neo-romantic castles. This 19th Century castle was the model for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland. No matter what season of the year this castle in the most beautiful location is the best place to visit. You’ll never want to leave this place guaranteed. You’ll start to explore the castle beginning from the Servant’s quarters on the upper first floor. The second floor haven’t being completed, a spiral stairways lead to the third floor which leads to the Throne room. The throne room in the castle is richly designed in Byzantine style. The main ornament – the throne is missing from here. The king’s room comes next which is in Romanesque style. Then the Anteroom leads to the dining room and the bedroom. Apart from the other rooms the Bedroom is magnificently engraved in Neo-Gothic style. It is said that 14 woodcarvers have toiled for 41/2 to shape it. The bed with beautiful carving is another example of their mastery. The portraits on the wall seem to depict love, repentance, salvation and guilt.

Semperoper: The Semper Opera House in Dresden is one of the most celebrated Opera Houses in the world. Built by Gottfried Semper this had been crafted in the early Renaissance style. Even though the architect was in exile in 1894 he was asked to do the reconstruction under public demand. Each side of the portal holds monuments of Goethe and Schiller. In the alcoves at the sides of the building statues of Moliere, Euripides, Sophocles and Shakespeare can be found. These were recovered from the old Opera House.

Shopping:

Generally, a majority of the shops tend to open at 7 to 10 in the morning from Monday to Saturday. They close within 8 on Saturdays. Though most of the stores are closed on Sunday cafes and bakeries do not fall under this. Exceptional takeaways would be cameras, handmade crystal, binoculars, porcelain, silver, Solingen knives, steel products, leather products, toys, sports material, Bavarian cloth musical instruments and Meissen china pieces.

Euro is the official currency. Major credit cards and Travellers cheques are accepted in most places.

Entertainment:

There are pubs, discos, concerts, operas and clubs all over the towns. Frankfurt’s Frankfurter Jazzkeller is loved by jazz lovers. There are several casinos in the city too. North of Frankfurt, a town by the name of Marburg is said to have the bubbliest evening entertainment. Düsseldorf hosts Cart wheeling in June that attracts a lot of children. The Berlin Love Parade in July attracts a lot of visitors and it is one of the major street festivals. It is also the biggest global dance event which is full of activity. Little Neudorf, in the south east of Germany holds a amusing and interesting festival called the arse-leather sledging championship and leather pants is the primary apparatus. Munich’s Oktoberfest attracts a lot of holiday makers. Though it is a drinking festival folk dances and local bands play good music.

Resorts:

Swissotel, Berlin: This elegant and lush hotel is located in the hub. The Swissotel has 316 aesthetically decorated luxurious rooms. Both smoking and non-smoking rooms are available. The restaurant offers exotic cuisine with a lovely ambience. It offers 12 meeting and banquet halls. The conference level holds several connectable meeting halls. Alexander Am Zoo Hotel: This hotel is situated in a quiet residential area within walking distance from the Old town of Frankfurt and a main shopping area.
