Guyana


This is a country that has been poured with natural beauty. The physical splendour of the Caribbean lands and South America blends here. Located at the Atlantic Ocean it is embraced by Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela. With justification to its name meaning "Land of many waters", the wavy rivers such as Demerara, Essequibo and the Berbice waters dampen the lands. The Kaieter waterfalls, the plateaus and the rainforests add the spice to this wonderful land. The climate of the country is tropical and it remains mostly hot and humid.

Travel to Guyana:

You can reach Guyana by Air France that land in Cayenne in French Guiana. You can also land in Trinidad and Tobago and board a concerned connecting flight to Guyana. Other flight services that cater to the country are Caribbean Star, META Airlines, Caribbean Airlines, North American and LIAT Ltd. BWIA operates daily services between Guyana and Barbados.
Cheddi Jagan International Airport is the aerodrome that receives international flights. It is located in Georgetown at a distance of about 40 km from the city. Buses service to the city but they are said to be crowded and there is no scheduled time for this service. Taxis are readily available and the journey time would be about 45 minutes. Duty free shops, restaurants and bank are accessible at the airport.

Kaieter Falls

One light wonder if God has taken a piece of heaven and planted it at this place. The Kaiter Falls is one of the most fabulous waterfalls with awe-striking beauty surrounding it. This is a major tourist attraction in the country. The refreshing water, steep cascades, the picturesque location and the mystifying rainforest mesmerises each and every person who catches a glimpse of it. Located in Kaieter National Park the falls’ airfield can be reached from the Ogle Airport or Cheddi Jagan International Airport

Iwokrama Rainforest

Guyana is known for its natural unspoiled beauty and Iwokrama Rainforest is another example. Occupying nearly one million acres of natural treasure it is located in central Guyana. Tremendous varieties of plants can be seen here including 1500 types of cactus which comprises prickly pear, saguaro and mother-in-law’s armchair. Innumerable varieties of rare and endangered species also form a population here. This is also a preferred spot for researchers. Several tour operators can arrange for your enjoyable journey but make sure they are reliable.

Language:

English is the national and official language of Guyana but he accent is a bit different. It is widely spoken and taught in schools. Media also uses this language. As it is a multicultural society, languages like Saint Lucian Creole French, Chinese, Urdu and Portuguese are also spoken among the immigrants and the minorities. Other languages that can be heard among the residents of Guyana are Arawak, Carib, Akawaio, Atorada, Guyanese Creole English, Berbice Creole Dutch, Caribbean Hindustani, Mapidian, Pemon and more.

Shopping:

Georgetown is a nice spot to shop and in Hibiscus Plaza a varied range of products like baskets, jewellery, clay goblets, straw hats and various artifices are available. Here you may find local art and craft goods that may interest you. On the west coast the Parika Market is a Sunday special and you may be able to see a variety of commodities. Precious and semi-precious stones, jewellery with intricate work and utilising local gold are at lovable prices. Other special purchases would include stuff like Amerindian bows and arrows, pottery, handicrafts, salad bowls and hammocks. You have to keep the receipts and other documentations safely if not complications may arise when clearing customs. Guyanese Dollars is the official currency and US Dollars are also accepted throughout the country. You can exchange your nation’s currency in banks. The Bureaux de change provide free conversion of currencies. Major credit cards are accepted but it is always advisable to consult with your credit card company. Traveller’s cheques are also received and tourists are advised to bring them to cover the sum of the stay. Retain them in US Dollars to avoid additional charges.

Georgetown

This capital of Guyana is located at the mouth of Demerara River by the Atlantic Ocean. Being the largest city it acts as an administrative spot for Guyana. It can also be mentioned as the financial and retail hub. The city can be reached by the international airport or through Ogle airport which is close. It is also a major commercial spot.

Annai

This is a town in the upper Takutu – upper Essequibo region. It holds the Pakaraima Mountains and the Rupununi River by it. You can reach this town by the road from the capital. The airfield here receives domestic flights. You can reach the Iwokrama Rainforest within a short distance from this airstrip.
