Niue

Not many people know about the country called Niue. But it is a beautiful country. The meaning of Niue is "Behold the coconut". Many islanders commonly call it "the rock". Niue is one of the smallest nations in the Pacific. The people of Niue are very friendly and warm hearted.

Travel to Niue

You can take a flight to Niue from New Zealand. There are flights to the country from Auckland and Polynesian Airlines provides a regular link to Samoa. The international airport in Niue is the Hanan airport that is located about 2 miles from Alofi. There are regular taxis available for the convenience of the tourists. The public transportation system within the country is quite weak. The only alternative to travel round the country is by taking a taxi or hiring a car, motorcycle or a scooter. But driving through the country is not very easy. The country lacks paved roads and during the day, chickens are the greatest obstruction in smooth driving. It does not mean that night driving is convenient. The crabs create great mess during the night.

Attractions

Although Niue is a small country but has some really good attractions for its tourists. One of the most visited sites is the Hakapu village. The local atmosphere of the village is a great source of attraction for most of the tourists. The village has a special dance night every Wednesday evening. Also there are great traditional dishes to treat your taste buds with great music and dances by the local public. The village gives you a glimpse of the tradition and customs of the country. Hio beach is another most visited attraction in the country. Hio Beach is arrived at by a wooden staircase downhill the Cliffside. It is the best and longest stretch of sand on the islet. At the time of low tide you can stroll across the reef about 100m north to a calm snorkeling pond. The snaky gulf is full of tropical fish and is fringed with coral; it has petite extensions, caves and two swim through. Another famous attraction is the Avaiki Cave. Avaiki Cave is named after the renowned Polynesian home and was where Niue's first pioneers arrived. A slender canyon guides to a coastal cave cribbing a divine rock pond. Swimming is prohibited at Avaiki on a Sunday and when the kaloama (goatfish) eggs. Vaikona Chasm is another famous attraction of the country. You will have to hike the jungles puzzle through coral summits to arrive at Vaikona Chasm. Slide down into the gloom through a slanting cavern to the gulch floor. At the near finish is a petite freshwater pond and further in is a bigger pond. Jade ferns fringe the ponds. It is a paranormal swim under a partition to the finish of the lengthy pool, developing in a hefty gloomy cave. The courageous can carry on through more caverns. A local guide, submerged light, mask and snorkel, are really important if you want to explore the Vaikona Chasm

Language

The major languages spoken in the country are Niuean and English.

Shopping

Shopping in Niue requires a bit of planning. The shops in the country are not open all time. Most of the markets of the islands are open from nine in the morning to four in the evening. Other than these timing only small shops are open, which do not have much to shop. Niuean weave is believed to be amongst the optimum in the Pacific and the local women are extremely conceited of their talent; mats, hats, bags and baskets are prepared from locally grown pandanus in entirely conventional and completely manual techniques. Most of the traditional items available in the markets are hand made and present a glimpse of the traditional art and culture of the country. If you like things that are unique than Niue is the right place for you to shop. The traditional handicrafts and the pieces of art are not bulk produced but are limited in number. This makes them rare and unique. They make a perfect gift for your near and dear ones back home.

Destinations in Niue

Alofi

One of the most visited destinations of the country is Alofi. It is the capital of Niue. It is small town, no more than a long street that stretches for many kilometers. It is situated along the beautiful rocky coastline. There are large number of traditional Canoe landing places. One of the most famous places is the Opaahi Landing. It is the place where Captain Cook made a fruitless effort to come ashore way back in the year 1744.
